In the late ‘90s, a new millennium was about to dawn on the planet Earth. Electric typewriters were swept off desktops in exchange for the computer. Economies, businesses and even governments were being redesigned. The global economy was changing the way companies viewed competition and opportunities.

Demographic shifts were bringing waves of new people into new places. Yes, times were changing and changing fast. Every aspect of human thought and existence had to be re-examined and retooled. Those who did not adapt were bound to be left behind, for the year 2000 was at hand.

But somehow, the City of Hagerstown didn’t get the memo. Earth to Hagerstown is a collection of columns by humorist Tim Rowland, chronicling a protected, rural community struggling to keep up with the times. But not struggling too awfully hard. Late 20th-century Hagerstown was still battling

deer breaking into doctors’ offices, blaming droughts on cloud seeders, and trying to decide whether it, as a community, was ready for ESPN 2.

Of course the rest of the world was having trouble, too, what with mass chicken executions and accusations that the Teletubbies were gay. Tim Rowland captures it all in hilarious fashion as only he, and maybe 5,000 other humor writers, can. So sit back and enjoy the merriment, and perhaps one day this far-off community will join society-at-large as it hears our distant, desperate call of Earth to Hagerstown!?
